Pothole Insurance

Protect yourself from unexpected pothole repair costs

A single pothole can cause expensive damage to your tyres, wheels, suspension, wheel alignment, bodywork, paintwork or headlights.

Pothole Insurance from Bettersafe.com is designed to reimburse you for eligible repair costs if your private car is damaged after hitting a pothole on a public highway.

This is a reimbursement policy, which means you must pay for the repairs first and then submit a claim with supporting evidence.

Pothole damage can be frustrating, inconvenient and costly. Even relatively minor damage to a tyre, alloy wheel or suspension component can leave you with an unexpected garage bill.

Our Pothole Insurance gives you protection against eligible repair costs, up to the policy limits, following damage caused by hitting a pothole during the period of insurance.

What Is Covered?

Get cover for pothole damage to your car.

Our Pothole Insurance can reimburse eligible repair costs for damage caused by hitting a pothole on a public highway, including:

  • Tyres — up to £200 per tyre, subject to the annual policy limit
  • Wheels — up to £250 per wheel, subject to the annual policy limit
  • Wheel alignment and rebalancing
  • Suspension damage
  • Bodywork, paintwork and headlight damage

The maximum total amount payable is up to £2,000 in any period of insurance, subject to the policy terms, limits and exclusions.

Why would I need Pothole Insurance?

Potholes are a common cause of vehicle damage, particularly to tyres, alloy wheels and suspension.

Without separate pothole cover, you may have to pay the repair bill yourself or try to recover your costs from the relevant local authority. This can take time and may not always be successful. Otherwise, you will have to claim from your motor insurer, which may affect your no-claim discount and next years renewal premium.

Pothole Insurance gives you a more straightforward route to claim reimbursement for eligible repair costs, provided the claim meets the policy terms.

Important things to know

This policy is designed for private cars only.

You must:

  • Own or lease the vehicle.
  • Have a valid motor insurance policy in force for the vehicle.
  • Be a permanent resident of the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man.
  • Hold a full valid UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or internationally recognised driving licence.
  • Use the vehicle on a public highway.
  • Provide evidence of the pothole incident and repair costs.

Claims must be notified as soon as reasonably possible and within 30 days of the damage occurring.

Exclusions

This policy will not cover every situation. Key exclusions include:

  • Damage that happened before the policy started or after it ended.
  • Damage where there is not enough evidence to validate the incident.
  • The policy excess shown in your policy schedule.
  • Recovery, towing or other associated costs.
